Kathryn Lasky's powerhouse novel is a dramatic historical saga that brings the reader face-to-face with some of the worst atrocities ever committed against humankind in the name of God. "Kazunomiya finds her own future in question, when she learns that her betrothal to a prince she has known since childhood may be broken so that her half-brother, the Emperor, can make an alliance by marrying her off to the young man that will be the next shogun of Japan. A reader writes:

This is a fantastic book to read with a kid. It has page-turning action and an adventure-filled plot that keeps readers (kids and adults alike) captivated from beginning to end. The story contains great lessons in courage, cleverness, and belief in one's own abilities. At the same time, it teaches kids all about different types of owls and their habitats. Can't wait to find out what happens in the next one!

  Guardians of Ga’Hoole

THE JOURNEY

Soren, Gylfie, Twilight, and Digger travel to the Great Ga'Hoole Tree, a mythical place where an order of owls rises each night to perform noble deeds. Soren and his group are seeking help to fight a great evil they discovered in the owl world.

A student writes:

"This book is absolutely excellent! I am eagerly awaiting the arrival of the next books in the series. Perhaps the author isn't the best poet, but that's not the point of the story. The point of the story is to believe in yourself, no matter what obstacles you encounter, which Soren and Gylfie (the main characters) definitely accomplished. This book will make you laugh (the owls say "Good light" instead of "good night") and it may make you cry (but I won't tell you when or why). This book is definitely for fans of Richard Adams's Watership Down (which I shall read soon). Reading it would be a wiser choice than any owl could ever make!"

It is rife with intrigue and turmoil as her father fights for his rights to rule - and she struggles against the confinement her Muslim religion dictates. Jahanara's diary allows readers to witness the exotic splendor and unforgettable drama of this past great dynasty.

Mary, Queen of Scots,

Part of the Royal Diaries Series from Scholastic

" In this fictional journal in the Royal Diary series, Lasky focuses on a relatively stable period in the young queen's life-her time in France, betrothed to the Dauphin Francis. As in her previous titles about queens in the series-Elizabeth 1 (1999) and Marie Antoinette (2000)-here Lasky creates a voice that's both accessible and believable, deftly incorporating historical detail and the intricacies of court life and behavior while showing the teenage queen as a compelling, independent character who still fights with her friends, yearns for her mother, and experiments with outfits and makeup, with some near-disastrous results. A useful historical note helps separate fact from fiction, and, as in others in the series, a family tree and handsome portraits round out the back matter. A lively, well-written novel for both personal reading and curricular use"
